SETI research is based on three hypotheses, which study of Mars seems to confirm: - Life on Earth is the result of the natural evolution of physical processes in the cosmos. - The history of life on Earth could have been duplicated elsewhere. (We have seen that life may have appeared on Mars, but that further evolution may have been hindered by later conditions on the Red Planet.) - Human intelligence is not the highest stage of development that the cosmos may have produced. The SETI principle is therefore very simple: To try to receive broadcasts, whether they are intentional or not, by means of electromagnetic waves. (The SETI "window" ranges from 1 to 10 gigahertz, thus it includes 100 billion possible bands of 0.1 hertz.) If we can prove that the waves detected are not "natural," we will have proven that we are not alone in the Universe. MARS BETAT
